You may have seen news reports in the past few days regarding butter flavoring used in microwave popcorn. We want our valued customers to know the facts.
Ramsey Popcorn has been in business for over 60 years and has always been a good corporate citizen. The company follows all USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) and FDA (Food & Drug Administration) regulations to produce products that are safe for consumption by consumers. All of our flavors are USDA and FDA approved and they have been deemed microwave popcorn safe for human use and consumption.
The flavoring to which the reports refer to is called diacetyl, which is a naturally occurring component also found in many fruits, butter, and other dairy products. Diacetyl can also be made synthetically and is used in thousands of other products (besides other brands of microwave popcorn) including cake mix, cookies, frozen foods, potato chips, and snacks.
Although diacetyl has long been considered safe for use in consumer food products, the flavoring has been cited as a possible source of injury to certain food company employees who may have inhaled large amounts of diacetyl while mixing it under unsafe conditions.
We have had no employee incidents related to diacetyl exposure and we have adhered to government safety guidance for its use. However, out of concern for worker health and safety Ramsey Popcorn made a decision several months ago to eliminate diacetyl as an additive and we are in the process of changing our butter flavor formulas. The change should be complete over the next several weeks.
All CAMP MASTERS Gourmet Caramel Corn, Chocolatey Caramel Corn, Supreme Caramel Popcorn, and our 3-Way Cheesy Cheese Popcorn Tin do not have any added diacetyl flavoring.
CAMP MASTERS will continue to bring the best products available to continue to support Boy Scout Fundraising. Thank you for your support.
